Vik, Iceland: A charming town on the black sand coast

Vik is a small town on the south coast of Iceland, about 180 kilometers from Reykjavik. It is the southernmost town in Iceland with a permanent population, and is known for its black sand beaches, basalt sea stacks, and the Reynisdrangar sea pillars.

Vik has a long history, dating back to the settlement of Iceland in the 9th century. The town was originally called Þykkvibær, which means "thick farmstead." The name Vik was adopted in the 19th century.

Today, Vik is a popular tourist destination, thanks to its stunning scenery and proximity to some of Iceland's most popular natural attractions. The town has a small number of shops, restaurants, and hotels, and is a great place to stop for a break on your journey along the south coast.

If you're looking for food in Vik, be sure to check out The Soup Company. This local restaurant serves up a variety of traditional Icelandic soups, including lamb stew, fish soup, and pea soup. The Soup Company can get very busy during the summer months, so it's a good idea to book ahead.

Another great option for food in Vik is Skool Beans Café. This fun and quirky café is housed in an old school bus, and serves up a variety of coffees, teas, and cakes. Skool Beans Café is a great place to relax and people-watch, but be warned that tall people may hit their heads on the bus's low ceilings!

In addition to its great food, Vik also has a number of other things to offer visitors. Be sure to check out the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, the Reynisfjara black sand beach (I'll write a separate post about it!), and the Víkurkirkja church. You can also go hiking, whale watching, or visit the Lava Tunnel Raufarhólshellir.

Vik is a charming town with a lot to offer visitors. If you're looking for a break from the hustle and bustle of Reykjavik, Vik is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Iceland.

Here are some additional tips for visiting Vik:

  • The best time to visit Vik is during the summer months (June-August), when the weather is warm and sunny. However, Vik is a popular tourist destination, so be sure to book your accommodation and activities in advance.
  • If you're planning on hiking, be sure to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. The weather in Vik can change quickly, so it's also a good idea to pack a raincoat.
  • If you're visiting Vik during the summer, be sure to try the local seafood. The town has a number of great restaurants that serve fresh fish and shellfish.
  • Don't forget to bring your camera! Vik is a beautiful town with stunning scenery, and you'll want to capture your memories on film.
