Finnkino: A Cinematic Empire in the Heart of Finland

I love films, and going to the movies has always been one of my favourite things to unwind and relax.

Finnkino stands as a cinematic giant of Helsinki, dominating the nation's movie theaters with a vast network of venues. With a rich history spanning over a century, Finnkino has played a pivotal role in shaping the Finnish film experience, introducing audiences to the latest blockbusters, classic cinema, and a diverse range of international films. In early 2000 Finnkino acquired its rival Sandrew-Metronome becoming a dominant player in the Finnish cinema scene.

Decades of Cinematic Excellence

Finnkino's origins can be traced back to 1986, when the first Finnkino theater opened its doors in Helsinki. Since then, the company has grown into a national institution, operating over ober 100 movie theaters across Finland, showcasing a wide array of films to diverse audiences.

A Home to Mainstream Movies

Finnkino's theaters are known for their impressive selection of mainstream films, catering to the tastes of a wide range of moviegoers. From Hollywood blockbusters to critically acclaimed dramas, Finnkino ensures that there's something for everyone. For those with a slightly more cultivated movie taste, there are other options in town that I'll talk about later (stay tuned!).

However, Finnkino also has a commitment to showcasing underground cinema, participating in Rakkautta&Anarkiaa (Love and Anarchy), rhe annual Helsinki International Film Festival. R&A is definitively worth a visit for any movie lovers visiting Helsinki in September.

Expensive Tickets and No Outside Food or Drinks

Despite its wide selection of films and commitment to diverse cinema, Finnkino has faced criticism for its high ticket prices. The cost of attending a movie at a Finnkino theater can be prohibitive for some, particularly for families and those on a tight budget.

Another point of contention is the policy of not allowing outside food or drinks into Finnkino theaters. This policy has been criticized for being restrictive and inconvenient, especially for those who prefer to bring their own snacks or beverages.

A Cinematic Giant with Room for Improvement

As Finnkino continues to expand its operations, it is important to address these concerns and ensure that its theaters are accessible and enjoyable for all audiences. By offering more affordable ticket prices and implementing more relaxed policies on outside refreshments, Finnkino can further solidify its position as a cinematic giant that caters to the needs of all Finnish moviegoers.
