Getting Around Barcelona: A Guide to Public Transportation
Barcelona has a well-developed public transportation system that makes it easy to get around the city. I wouldn't even consider renting a car unless I would like to visit a place outside the city that is not reachable by public transportation or if I would not be fit to take the public tansportation. The metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around, and it now even goes to the airport. There are also buses, trams, and local trains that can be used to get around the city.

The metro is the backbone of Barcelona's public transportation system. It has 12 lines that cover most of the city, and it is easy to use. The metro runs from 5am to 12am, and tickets can be purchased at vending machines or at the ticket office.
The first metro line in Barcelona was opened in 1924. The system has been expanded several times since then, and it is now one of the busiest metro systems in Spain.
The Airport
The metro now goes all the way to the airport, making it much easier to get to and from the city. The airport line is called L9 Sud, and it takes about 30 minutes to get from the city center to the airport. No more the slow local train to the airport!
Local Trains
In addition to the metro, there are also a number of local trains that can be used to get around Barcelona. These trains are operated by the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), and they can be used to travel to places like Castelldefels and Sitges.
Buses
There are also a number of buses that run throughout Barcelona. These buses are operated by the Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB), and they can be used to get to places that are not served by the metro or the local trains.
Taxis
Taxis are also a convenient way to get around Barcelona. Taxis are plentiful, and they are relatively inexpensive. However, it is important to remember that taxis can be expensive during peak times, such as late at night or on weekends. A free taxi has a green light on the car's roof and taxi's can be hailed directly from the street.
Funiculars and cable cars
Here are some tips for getting around Barcelona by public transportation:
- Buy a Hola Barcelona travel card. This card gives you unlimited travel on the metro, buses, and trams for a set period of time.
- Use the TMB app to plan your journeys. This app shows you the real-time status of the metro, buses, and trams, and it can help you plan the best route to your destination.
- Be aware of the pickpockets. Pickpockets are a problem in Barcelona, so be sure to keep your belongings close to you at all times. I have travelled a lot with public transportation in Barcelona and never had anything stolen from me so far, but I'm always alert.
I hope this blog has helped you plan your trip to Barcelona. With its convenient public transportation system, you can easily get around the city and see all the sights.
