Sushi please: the big sushi edition

I sometimes get a craving for fresh sushi, and for that I keep a list of places that serve decent sushi in Helsinki city center. Now I'd like to share that list with you as well should you get a similar craving.

Ginza Sushi Bar

Ginza Sushi Bar offers an authentic Japanese dining experience focused on fresh, high-quality sushi and other Japanese dishes. Here's a quick rundown:

Cuisine: Japanese, specializing in sushi and sashimi sets, rice bowls, and starters like gyoza and tataki.

Vibe: Cozy and modern, with an open kitchen where you can watch the sushi chefs work their magic. Small and intimate.

Highlights: Fresh ingredients, focus on high-quality fish, variety of sushi sets and a la carte options.

Good to know: Offers vegetarian options and has a takeaway menu.

Overall, Ginza Sushi Bar is a great choice for anyone seeking a delicious and authentic Japanese meal in Helsinki, perfect for both a casual lunch or a more formal dinner.

Konnichiwa

Konnichiwa in Kamppi is a restaurant specializing in buffet-style Japanese and Asian cuisine. Here's a quick look:

Cuisine: Focuses on sushi and a variety of Asian dishes served buffet-style. Expect classics like maki rolls and nigiri alongside options like warm dishes, miso soup, and fresh vegetables.

Vibe: Casual and family-friendly, with a focus on quick and convenient dining.

Highlights: Affordable prices, variety of sushi and Asian dishes, good option for those with a bigger appetite.

Good to know: May get crowded during peak lunch hours.

Overall, Konnichiwa is a solid choice for a budget-friendly and convenient lunch or dinner of Japanese and Asian fare in Kamppi, Helsinki.

Mashiro

Mashiro is a sushi restaurant chain in Helsinki known for its delicious and affordable sushi offerings. They have several locations spread around the city, making it convenient to grab a quick and satisfying sushi meal.

One of their key features is the sushi belt (sushiberia) concept in some of their restaurants. This conveyor belt circles the dining area, showcasing a variety of colorful and fresh sushi plates. Diners can simply grab the plates they like as they pass by, creating a fun and interactive dining experience.

Here's a quick rundown of Mashiro:

Cuisine: Specializes in sushi and other Japanese dishes like donburi bowls (rice bowls with toppings).

Vibe: Casual and quick-service, perfect for a grab-and-go meal or a sit-down lunch.

Highlights: Affordable prices, fresh ingredients, variety of sushi options on the belt (in select locations).

Good to know: Offers student discounts and take-away options.

Overall, Mashiro is a great choice for anyone seeking a quick and delicious sushi fix in Helsinki. Whether you're looking for a fun and interactive experience with the sushi belt or a more traditional sit-down meal, Mashiro has something to offer. Remember to check if the specific Mashiro location you visit has the sushi belt, as it's not available in all of them.

Oishi 18

Oishi 18 in Helsinki is a sushi restaurant known for its focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients. It offers a delicious and satisfying sushi experience, but be aware there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • No buffet: Unlike some sushi restaurants, Oishi 18 doesn't have a buffet option.
  • All you can eat menu: They do offer an "all you can eat" sushi menu, which might be a good option for those with a big appetite.
  • Quality sushi: The highlight of Oishi 18 is definitely the sushi itself. They use fresh ingredients and the overall quality is high.
  • Service variability: It's important to note that service can be inconsistent. While some experiences might be great, my last visit involved slow service.

So, if you're looking for great sushi in Helsinki and are willing to order à la carte or try the "all you can eat" menu, Oishi 18 is worth considering. Just be prepared that service times might vary.

All in all Helsinki is a good place for grabbing sushi when you feel like it.

I will take a summer break now and will be back in August. Then we'll have a new destination so stay tuned!
