Vallisaari: A Transformed Military Fortress into a Haven for Art and Recreation in Helsinki

As we are entering the summer months I'd like to share with you one of my favourite summer destinations, Vallisaari. A 20-minute ferry trip from the Market Square takes you to a natural paradise with wonderful views, unique nature and nice hiking paths. The ferry operates typically from May to September, so Vallisaari is definitely a summer destination.


In the heart of the Helsinki archipelago, Vallisaari Island stands as a testament to Finland's rich and intricate history. This former military fortress, once a strategic stronghold protecting the city from seaborne threats, has undergone a remarkable transformation, evolving into a vibrant recreational destination and an artistic haven.

A Fortress in Defense of Helsinki

Vallisaari's military origins can be traced back to the 18th century, when it was constructed as part of the city's defenses against foreign invaders. The island's strategic location, surrounded by sea and offering panoramic views of the surrounding coastline, made it an ideal site for fortifications. Over the centuries, Vallisaari served as a key defensive outpost, playing a crucial role in protecting Helsinki from potential attacks.


A New Era of Recreation and Art

In the late 20th century, as Finland transitioned from a military state to a modern democracy, Vallisaari's role as a military fortress began to diminish. In the 1990s, the island was decommissioned and handed over to the City of Helsinki, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its history.

With its abundance of natural beauty, historical significance, and proximity to the city center, Vallisaari presented a unique opportunity for transformation. The island was carefully restored and developed into a recreational haven, offering visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse themselves in nature's embrace. The island was opened to the public in 2016.

Helsinki Biennal: A Celebration of Art in a Historical Setting

Vallisaari's transformation took a further step forward with the establishment of the Helsinki Biennal, an international art festival that showcases contemporary art in a unique and inspiring setting. The Biennal, held every two years, brings together renowned artists from around the world to create site-specific installations that explore themes of nature, culture, and the human experience amidst the island's historical fortifications and natural surroundings.

The art installations blend seamlessly with the island's environment, creating an immersive and thought-provoking experience for visitors. The Biennale has become a major cultural event in Helsinki, attracting art enthusiasts and visitors from all over the world.




A Thriving Community and a Beacon of Sustainability

Vallisaari's transformation has not only created a vibrant recreational destination but has also fostered a thriving community. The island is home to a variety of businesses, including restaurants, cafes, and art studios, providing employment opportunities and contributing to the local economy.

In addition, Vallisaari is committed to sustainability practices, aiming to minimize its environmental impact and promote eco-friendly practices. Solar panels provide renewable energy, and a network of trails encourages visitors to explore the island on foot or by bicycle.

Today, Vallisaari stands as a testament to Finland's ability to embrace its past while creating a vibrant future. Hallgrímskirkja: The Pride of Reykjavik

Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland. At 74.5 meters (244 ft) tall, it is the largest church in Iceland and among the tallest structures in the country.
